‘I can’t thank you both enough,’ I tell Helen and Robert on the train home. ‘It’s been a really lovely day.’

‘We’ve both enjoyed it too,’ they insist.

The kids are worn out. Archie’s asleep in his buggy as we walk back from the bus stop – even though he’s already had a sleep on the train. Mia’s dragging her feet and complaining that she wants to sit down. So when we get home I make them a quick toasted sandwich – that’ll have to do for today – and put them both in the bath to calm down the fractiousness before I read their bedtime stories.

‘So at last, you’ve had your day at the zoo!’ I say to Mia once Archie’s snuggled down in his cot and she’s under her covers, cuddled up with Ellie Elephant and the new favourite, Mr Meerkat. ‘And wasn’t it fun!’

‘Yes,’ she says sleepily. ‘I liked the meerkats best.’

‘And you finally saw a wolf!’ I remind her. ‘I liked all of it, did you?’

She nods and smiles, her eyes beginning to close.

‘I liked most of it,’ she says sleepily.

‘Good.’ I frown. I want to ask which part she didn’t like, but she’s half asleep, and anyway, it probably doesn’t mean anything. It’s probably just something silly like the burger not being exactly to her taste. She did seem a bit sulky at lunchtime – and it was after Helen had taken her to the loo. I wonder if I should ask Helen, tomorrow, whether anything happened. I sigh. I wish I didn’t always have to second-guess what might have happened to upset Mia, where Helen’s involved.

In the time I’ve sat there stroking Mia’s hair and pondering all this, she’s fallen fast asleep anyway – so I convince myself it couldn’t have been anything too serious.
